Log Home Chinking

Log Home Chinking

Chinking is the flexible sealant that fills the gaps between the logs of a log home or cabin, keeping out weather, drafts, moisture, and insects while preserving that classic, rustic look. Unlike rigid mortar, modern synthetic chinking stretches and compresses as your logs naturally move, settle, and shrink over the years — so your seal stays tight and your home stays comfortable. At Wasatch Timber, we carry Sashco Log Jam, the log chinking industry's recognized standard for synthetic chinking, along with the backer materials and application tools you need to do the job right the first time.

Choosing the Right Chinking for Your Log Home

The most important decision is color and quantity. Log Jam is available in multiple popular colors to complement or contrast your logs — from White and Mortar White to Light Gray, Gray, and Buff. For estimating how much you need, the general rule is that a 5-gallon pail covers roughly 100–200 linear feet depending on joint width and depth. Wider joints and deeper checks consume more material, so always measure your total linear footage and average joint width before ordering.

You'll also need the right application setup. Chinking applied from a 5-gallon bucket requires a bulk gun and a follow plate to feed the material smoothly. For the cleanest joints, install backer rod or grip strip first — this controls depth, prevents three-sided adhesion, and dramatically improves the durability of your seal.

Chinking vs. Caulk: What's the Difference?

Chinking is designed for the wide joints between logs and creates that signature textured mortar look. Caulk and sealant are for narrower gaps, checks, and cracks. Many log home owners use both: chinking for the primary log joints, and a sealant like Log Builder for finer gaps. If your joints are under about 1 inch, a textured caulk may be the better choice — see our Log Home Caulk & Sealant collection.

Before You Chink: Prep Matters

For chinking to bond properly and last, your logs need to be clean and dry. If you're chinking a new build, surface dust and mill glaze can interfere with adhesion; on a restoration project, old failing chinking, dirt, and pollen need to come off first. See our Log Cleaning & Prep collection for the cleaners and brushes that get your logs ready. If you're also planning to stain, the standard order is clean → stain → chink — check out our Log & Cabin Stain collection for the full system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much chinking do I need?
Measure the total linear feet of your log joints and your average joint width. As a starting estimate, a 5-gallon pail covers about 100–200 linear feet at a 1-inch joint width. Wider joints reduce coverage.

Can I chink over old chinking?
In many cases yes, provided the existing chinking is clean, sound, and well-adhered. Failing, cracked, or peeling chinking should be removed first for a lasting seal.

How thick should chinking be applied?
Sashco recommends applying sealant 1/4" to 1/2" thick, never thicker. Use backer rod or grip strip behind the joint to control depth and ensure proper two-point adhesion.

Do I need backer rod?
For most joints, yes. Backer rod (or trapezoid grip strip for wider chink lines) prevents the chinking from bonding to the back of the joint, which lets it stretch properly as your logs move.
