Engelmann Spruce (Standing Dead): The Wall-Building Log

When people picture a classic log home wall — round, peeled logs stacked course after course — they're usually picturing spruce. Our standing dead Engelmann spruce is harvested from Utah's high-altitude forests, much of it beetle-killed timber that died standing and seasoned naturally on the stump for years before we ever touched it. That natural seasoning process is a real advantage: the wood loses moisture gradually while still standing, which means less shrinkage and better dimensional stability once it's in your wall compared to green timber that has to dry after it's already built into a structure.

Spruce is comparatively lightweight, has a fine, straight grain, and peels cleanly, which is exactly why it's the standard choice for full log walls, hand-peeled and milled log products, and log furniture. It's not the strongest structural wood in absolute terms, but for stacked wall construction, strength-to-weight and dimensional stability matter more than raw structural capacity — and that's spruce's whole game. Harvesting standing dead spruce also happens to be a genuinely sustainable practice, since it puts already-dead, beetle-killed timber to use rather than harvesting live, healthy forest.

Douglas Fir: The Structural Workhorse

Where spruce builds the walls, Douglas fir carries the load. Lodgepole pine earned its name honestly — its naturally straight, slender growth habit, a result of growing densely packed in mountain forests, made it the historical choice for actual lodge poles and tipi poles. That same characteristic makes it excellent for a different job than either spruce or fir: rails, fencing, railings, and rustic furniture and accent work, rather than full structural walls or heavy framing.

What "FOHC" Actually Means, and Why It Matters

FOHC stands for Free of Heart Center, and it's a milling specification, not a marketing term. Every log has a pith — the original center of the tree — and as timber dries, stress concentrates around that pith, which is where the deepest, most structurally significant checking tends to form. An FOHC timber is milled so the pith falls outside the finished piece entirely, which means the checking that does occur is shallower and more evenly distributed rather than concentrated in one structurally critical line down the center. For a beam or post that's actually carrying load — a ridge beam, a header, a structural post — that difference matters. It's part of why FOHC Douglas fir costs more than a boxed-heart timber of the same dimension: you're milling away more of the log to get a piece with more predictable long-term performance.

A Quick Word on Sourcing and Sustainability

Both of the beetle-affected species in this comparison tell a similar story, and it's worth understanding rather than treating as a footnote. Mountain pine beetle and spruce beetle outbreaks have killed enormous amounts of standing timber across Utah and the broader Rockies over the past few decades. Can You Mix All Three in One Build?

Not just "can you" — most serious log home projects do. It's entirely standard to frame structural elements in Douglas fir, build the walls in standing dead spruce, and finish railings and accent details in lodgepole pine. Each species is doing the job it's actually good at rather than being asked to do everything. The one thing worth planning for: different species can take stain slightly differently due to variations in grain and tannin content, so if a consistent finished color across all three matters to your project, it's worth testing your chosen stain on a sample of each species before committing to the whole build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one of these three species simply the strongest?

Douglas fir has the highest structural strength-to-weight ratio of the three, which is exactly why it's the standard for beams and framing rather than wall logs. But "strongest" isn't the right measure for spruce or lodgepole, since neither is being asked to do a structural fir's job in a well-planned build.

Is standing dead spruce lower quality because the tree was already dead?

No — if anything, it's an advantage for this application. A tree that dies standing and seasons naturally over time loses moisture gradually and evenly, which reduces the shrinkage and checking you'd otherwise deal with in green timber that has to dry out after it's already built into a wall.

Can lodgepole pine be used for full log walls instead of spruce?

It's not what we'd recommend or what we stock it for. Our lodgepole comes in smaller diameters specifically suited to rails and accent work; if you need wall logs, standing dead spruce or a similar larger-diameter species is the appropriate choice.
