Rot is different — by the time it's visible enough for most people to notice, it's usually already gone further than it looks from the outside. What Actually Causes Log Rot
Rot isn't caused by age. It's caused by moisture sitting against wood long enough for decay fungi to take hold and start breaking down wood fibers. Wood that gets wet and dries out regularly essentially never rots — it's trapped, sustained moisture that does the damage. That's why every root cause of log rot we see traces back to something that stopped water from shedding or drying the way it should: a failed chinking or caulk joint letting water track into a seam, poor grading sending runoff back against the foundation logs, a gutter or downspout dumping water onto the same spot repeatedly, or a stain that failed years ago and was never caught, leaving bare wood exposed to the weather. Rot is very rarely the original problem. It's what happens after a smaller problem goes unaddressed.
Where Rot Starts, Almost Every Time
If you're checking your own log home, don't wander the whole exterior randomly — go straight to the spots that account for the overwhelming majority of the rot we find:
- Ground-contact and near-ground logs, especially where grading sends water back toward the foundation instead of away from it
- Splash-back zones directly below rooflines without gutters, and below downspout outlets

- Log ends and exposed end grain, which absorb and hold moisture far faster than the length of the log
- Under windows and around poorly flashed openings, where water can be directed straight into the wall instead of away from it
- Deck ledger and railing post connections, where hardware penetrations and horizontal surfaces trap water against vertical logs
How to Tell Early Rot from Normal Weathering
This is the part most homeowners get wrong — not because it's complicated, but because nobody's shown them what to actually check.
The screwdriver test. Press the tip of a screwdriver or awl into the wood at a low angle. Sound wood resists and you'll feel it bite into solid material. Rotted wood gives way easily, sometimes sinking in an inch or more with almost no resistance, or crumbling around the tip.
The sound test. Tap the wood with the handle of a screwdriver or a small hammer along a suspect area, moving in a few inches at a time. Solid wood gives a consistent, slightly sharp knock. Rotted wood underneath sounds duller and hollow — the difference is subtle at first but becomes obvious once you've heard both side by side on the same wall.
Visual signs. Dark staining or discoloration that doesn't wash off, a sunken or slightly collapsed section of an otherwise round log, a spongy texture you can see even without touching it, or in more advanced cases, actual fungal growth — small shelf-like conks or mushroom-like growth are a clear sign decay is active and has been for a while.
The smell test. Advanced rot often has a distinct musty, earthy odor, especially noticeable if you're checking a spot that's been damp for a while or checking from the interior side of an exterior wall.
If wood passes the screwdriver and sound tests, you're most likely looking at surface weathering or staining — a cosmetic and maintenance issue, not a structural one. If it fails either test, you've found actual decay, and the next question is how far it goes.
Surface Rot vs. Structural Rot
This distinction is the difference between a weekend repair and a job that needs a professional, and it's worth being honest about rather than assuming every soft spot is a simple epoxy fix.
Surface and moderate rot — decay confined to the outer inch or two of a log, without significant loss of the log's overall cross-section, and not located at a load-bearing connection point — is a strong candidate for consolidation and epoxy repair. This describes the large majority of the rot we find during routine inspections, because it's caught relatively early.
Structural rot — decay that's compromised a significant portion of a log's cross-section, especially at a bearing point, corner notch, or anywhere carrying real structural load — is not a job for epoxy alone. This is when you need an assessment from someone who can evaluate whether the section needs sistering, partial log replacement, or engineering input. We'll tell a customer this directly rather than sell them a product that isn't going to solve the actual problem. Repairing Surface and Moderate Rot: The Process
For the repairs that are within epoxy territory, here's the actual process, using the same two-part system we've relied on for years:
1. Remove all deteriorated material back to sound wood. Dig out everything soft, dark, or spongy with a chisel, wire wheel, or rotary tool. Don't stop at "mostly solid" — any remaining decayed fiber will undermine the repair and can let decay continue underneath it.
2. Let the area dry completely. Epoxy consolidants need dry wood to bond properly. If the source of the moisture hasn't been fixed yet — a failed joint, bad grading, a gutter issue — address that first, or the repair will fail again from the same cause.
3. Apply LiquidWood to consolidate and harden the remaining wood fibers. This is a penetrating epoxy hardener, not a filler — it soaks into weathered and partially decayed wood and hardens it permanently, restoring structural integrity to fibers that would otherwise crumble. It's a 1:1 mix of two parts, has roughly a 30-minute pot life, and hardens within hours depending on temperature. Applied by brush, pour, or injection directly onto bare, dry wood between 50–90°F.
4. Fill and rebuild missing wood with WoodEpox. Once the LiquidWood has hardened, this shrink-free epoxy putty rebuilds whatever wood is actually missing — it's a 1:1 mix, roughly a 20-minute pot life, hardens in one to two hours, and can be shaped, carved, and built up in any thickness since it won't slump even on vertical or overhead repairs. It's applied by gloved hand or putty knife and is 100% compatible with LiquidWood underneath it.
5. Shape and finish once fully cured. WoodEpox can be sawed, planed, drilled, sanded, carved, and routed just like the surrounding wood, which is what lets a well-done repair blend into a round log profile instead of looking like an obvious patch.
6. Prime and finish to match. Once shaped, the repair can be painted, stained, or coated the same as the wood around it — both products can be tinted and are built to take a finish, so a properly blended repair holds up right alongside your regular stain schedule going forward.

When Epoxy Isn't the Right Call
We'd rather say this plainly than let a customer waste money: if a screwdriver sinks deep into a log at a corner notch, a bearing point, or across a large percentage of the log's cross-section, that's not an epoxy repair. That's a structural conversation. Consolidants and epoxy fillers are extremely effective at what they're designed for — restoring surface and moderate decay to a sound, paintable, structurally reasonable condition — but they aren't a substitute for replacing a log that's lost the bulk of its load-bearing capacity. Preventing Rot From Coming Back
A repair that isn't paired with fixing the original moisture source will fail again, usually in the same spot. Once the repair is done:
- Treat any newly exposed bare wood nearby with Tim-bor before finishing, since borate treatment protects bare wood against both decay and insects going forward
- Fix the actual cause — regrade if drainage was the issue, reseal the joint if that was the source, redirect the downspout if that's what was hitting the wall
