Vigas, latillas and poles: what's the difference?

  • Vigas are round beams — traditionally 6" and larger in diameter — that carry the roof and ceiling in pueblo and Territorial architecture. They're set on top of the wall and left exposed, often projecting past the exterior face. Hand-peeled vigas are the classic look: a bright, faceted surface left by the drawknife.
  • Latillas are the small straight sticks — roughly 1½" to 3" in diameter — laid across the vigas in a herringbone or straight pattern to form the ceiling deck. The same stock is used for coyote fencing, ramada roofs, gates and railing infill.
  • Poles and logs cover everything in between: posts, corbels, railings, purlins, trusses, gateways and full log construction.

Our round stock is high-altitude Engelmann spruce and lodgepole pine — dense, straight-grained, naturally tapered, and dry. Standing-dead and character logs are available on request, as are split, tapered and end-cut vigas.

Hand-peeled, milled, or raw — how to choose

Hand-peeled is the traditional viga finish. Bark and cambium are drawn off by hand, leaving a faceted, slightly irregular surface that takes stain beautifully and reads as authentic in an exposed ceiling. Natural taper is retained.

Milled & peeled gives you a consistent diameter end-to-end with hand texture on the surface — the right call when vigas have to sit in matched pockets or a truss has to be repeatable.

Milled is lathed to a uniform diameter for the cleanest, most predictable installs. Raw logs ship with bark on for crews who peel on site or want maximum character.

What builders use them for

Exposed viga ceilings and projecting viga ends, latilla ceiling decks, coyote and corral fencing, ramadas and pergolas, portal posts and beams, log railings and stair parts, mantels, entry gateways, corbels, timber trusses and full log homes. If you're finishing exposed round wood, pair your order with log and timber stain and chinking and sealant.

Frequently asked questions

What size viga do I need?

Span, spacing and load govern it. As a rough starting point, exposed vigas on 24"–32" centers are commonly 8"–12" in diameter for residential spans up to about 16 feet — but have your engineer confirm the size for your span, snow load and species. We'll cut lengths to allow for the projection you want past the wall.

How big are latillas?

Typically 1½" to 3" in diameter and 4' to 8' long, sized to run across your viga spacing. Order 10–15% extra so you can cull for straightness and match diameters as you lay the pattern.

Are the logs dry?

Our spruce and lodgepole are air-dried from high-elevation stock, so moisture content is well below green. Round wood will still check and settle as it acclimates — that's normal and part of the look. Seal end grain and finish all faces to slow it down.

Can I order a size that isn't on the site?

Yes. We mill to order, and we regularly cut oversize vigas, extra-long poles, split vigas, tapered ends and custom counts. Send your take-off and we'll quote it.

Do you sell to contractors and dealers?

We do — volume and wholesale pricing is available on truckload quantities of vigas, latillas and poles. Contact us with your list for dealer pricing.
