What is an entrance monument?

An entrance monument is the structure that marks the way in - the timber gateway at the head of a subdivision, the log arch over a ranch drive, the post-and-beam frame that carries a resort, park, or business sign. It is the first thing every visitor sees and the last thing anyone wants to rebuild, so the wood behind it has to be sized right, set right, and finished right the first time.

Choosing the right material

Douglas Fir timber - the structural workhorse

Straight grain, an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and it takes stain evenly. Our #1 FOHC and boxed heart timbers are true-dimensional; S4S is surfaced smooth and runs about 1/2 in. under nominal. This is what most engineered post-and-beam monuments are built from.

Hand-peeled logs - the ranch gateway look

Draw-knife peeled so the natural taper, knots, and tool marks stay visible. Nothing else reads as authentically Western. Available 3-12 in. and 13-24 in. diameter, and we can peel up to 50 ft for a full drive-over span.

Lathe-milled & peeled logs - uniform and clean

Milled to a consistent diameter end to end, for a more finished, architectural look that still reads as log. Milled up to 32 ft.

Reclaimed & hand-hewn timber - instant history

Hand-hewn barn timber and reclaimed stock for monuments that need to look like they have always been there - historic districts, heritage ranches, restoration work, and themed properties.

Lodgepole pine & rails - accents and fencing

For the fence runs, rails, and secondary structure that tie the monument into the property line.

How we size an entrance monument

Every monument is different. Span, height, wind and snow load, sign weight, and your local building department all drive the final numbers. Here is the range we see most often, as a starting point for the conversation:

• Uprights - 8x8, 10x10, or 12x12 Douglas Fir on most subdivision and ranch entries. 6x6 is common on smaller post-and-panel monument signs. Hand-peeled log uprights typically run 10-16 in. diameter.
• Header beams - 6x12 and 8x12 Douglas Fir cover most single-drive spans. Wider spans, or a full drive-over arch across two lanes, usually move to glulam.
• Setting depth - plan on setting below your local frost line in concrete, with the buried portion borate-treated or in a naturally rot-resistant species.
• Overhead clearance - if vehicles pass underneath, confirm the clearance your fire district and delivery trucks require before anything gets cut.

Frequently asked questions

What size timbers do I need for an entrance monument?
Most subdivision and ranch entries use 8x8 to 12x12 Douglas Fir uprights with a 6x12 or 8x12 header; smaller post-and-panel monument signs often run 6x6. The right answer depends on your span, height, sign weight, and local load requirements - send us the drawing and we will size it with you. Have your engineer stamp anything structural.

Can you mill logs long enough to span a driveway?
Yes. We lathe-mill logs up to 32 ft and hand-peel up to 50 ft, which covers single and double-lane drive-over spans.

How do I keep the posts from rotting where they meet the ground?
Ground contact is where entrance monuments fail first. We offer borate treatment and naturally rot-resistant species for the buried and near-grade portion, and we can recommend the right sealer and stain for the exposed wood above it.

Can you match an existing monument or nearby structure?
Yes. We match species, dimension, and texture - raw, milled, hand-peeled, rough sawn, or hand-hewn - so a repair or a second entrance matches the first.

Do you supply the sign panel too?
Yes. We cut wood sign blanks and panels to size for carved, routed, or mounted signage, and we work with sign companies on the finished product.

Do you work with HOAs, developers, and public agencies?
Yes. We handle bid pricing, procurement paperwork, and specification requirements for community, commercial, and civic projects.
